Microsoft Information Protection: Data classification analytics
To better protect your data, the first step in the journey is for you to get a holistic understanding of the sensitive data in your digital estate and related user activities. The data classification capabilities in Microsoft 365 compliance center enable you to do that and take the next step towards establishing appropriate policies to better protect your sensitive data (e.g., by applying sensitivity labels and policies). Overview tab which shows you at a glance the locations of your digital content and most common sensitive information types and labels present. Importantly you don’t need to establish any policy to understand these details. Content Explorer tab provides you a richer understanding of your data at risk and visibility into amount and types of sensitive data in a document, including an integrated viewer displaying the full content in documents or emails. You can also filter by label or sensitive type to get a detailed view of locations where the sensitive data is stored. Activity Explorer tab provides a better understanding of activities related to your sensitive data and labels, such as label downgrades or external sharing that could expose your content to risk. It helps you investigate events that could be leading towards data leak scenarios (e.g., bulk label downgrades before sharing externally). Understanding these activities gives you the ability to identify the right policies for protection or data loss prevention (DLP) to ensure that your most sensitive data is secure.

Simplifying management of Intra-Org Spoof and DMARC Failures
Intra-Org Spoof and DMARC Failures – We are simplifying the way that our customer manage anti-spoofing by consolidating all spoof actions and management under one policy: the Anti-Phishing policy. This means that we will no longer take the Spam action, as dictated in the Anti-Spam policy, for intra-org spoof and DMARC failures. Cross-org spoof will continue to be managed by the Anti-Phishing policy without changes. Additionally, we have further simplified anti-spoofing protection management by stamping all mails, including intra-org spoof, with a Composite Authentication result in the headers. This makes it much easier to quickly decipher our verdict on the authentication of the mail and whether we deemed the mail spoof, and why. This may result in some messages that were previously marked as spam will start getting marked as phish (CAT:SPOOF). In still other cases, customers that were moving all spam to the junk folder and phish to the quarantine would now see them going to quarantine. We’ll be gradually rolling these features out over the course of the next few weeks, and we expect the rollout to be complete by end of February.

Office ATP AIR – Exposing Investigation data through Management Activity API
In response to customer feedback and suggestions, and to ensure that our customers have access to critical information to investigate security incidents in their tenancy, we have made some enhancements to the Automated Investigation and Response (AIR) feature in Office 365 ATP. We have been working to meet the extensibility requirements of our customers, who want to leverage the intelligence of our investigations within their custom tools. As part of this work, we will be exposing information about AIR investigations through the Office 365 Management Activity API. This data will include Investigation metadata like ID, Name, Originating Alert ID along with link to the investigation for further analysis. In addition to this, we will also be providing high level information about the investigation actions and entities associated with that investigation. The investigation data will be sent as an event to the Management Activity API on the change of the status of an investigation. As an example, when the status of an investigation changes from Running to Pending Action, it will be captured as an event with the latest investigation data for that state made available through the Management Activity API. The enhancement will begin to rollout by end of July and is targeted to be saturated by 2nd week of August.

Enhanced filtering for connectors
This feature will help organizations that have complex mail routing set ups. This basically means that your MX record does not point to Office 365 EOP and you receive mail through an inbound connector. Properly configured connectors are a trusted source of incoming mail to Office 365, but connectors aren’t necessarily the true source of messages and obfuscates the sender information. Enhanced filtering for connectors is a feature that allows you to filter email based on the actual source of messages that arrive over the connector. This is also known as skip listing and this feature will allow you to overlook, or skip, any IP addresses that are considered internal to you in order to get the last known external IP address, which should be the actual source IP address resulting in improved effectiveness. We believe that this feature will help those customers that aren’t fully leveraging EOP/ATP’s full value to show why you could or should move your MX record to EOP.

Information Protection: Manual classification with sensitivity labels for Office on the web
Before this release, you couldn’t apply your sensitivity labels in Office on the web. You didn’t see the Sensitivity option on the ribbon, or the applied label name on the status bar. In addition, if you used desktop apps to label your files and then save them on SharePoint or OneDrive, the service couldn’t process the content of these files if the label applied encryption. Coauthoring, eDiscovery, Data Loss Prevention, Search, Delve, and other collaborative features didn’t work under these circumstances. This release enables all these capabilities. In addition to displaying sensitivity labels to users, for new and changed files that have a sensitivity label applied that includes encryption with a cloud-based key.

Office 365 ATP, Secure by Default: Do not Allow for domains that fail authentication
This feature has been postponed. We see lots of cases where configuration of our protection stack has enabled malicious content to be inadvertently delivered to end users. We’re working on a few features that will help address this problem. The second phase of this is blocking domains that fail authentication. The Antispam policy allows administrators to “Allow” domains regardless of the reputation of the domain. We’re changing our policies to not honor Allow rules when the domain fails authentication. This can be resolved by either addressing the authentication concerns with the sender domain, or adding a transport rule to allow the domain.
